Campaign Emails

I appreciate constituents’ concerns about a wide variety of national issues.

I often receive identical emails which are sent from campaign organisations. I appreciate that these issues are of importance to constituents, but the volume of campaign emails that are now being generated has meant my responses to urgent casework enquiries were getting delayed and I therefore can no longer guarantee an individual reply to standard emails.

I have therefore created a ‘campaign emails’ section of my website and I will be posting my responses to various subjects on to this page.

If you send me a standard email, you will receive a response directing you to my website.

I shall endeavour to update topics as soon as I have had the chance to consult with Ministers and to conduct research into the concerns raised in these emails.

I shall, of course, continue to respond to individual constituency casework enquiries via email and letter.

Badger Culling

As you will know, most of the powers related to wildlife are devolved to the Scottish Parliament. There are currently no plans to cull badgers in Scotland as we are a Bovine TB free country.

It is important that the UK continues to invest in large public transport infrastructure projects in order to rebalance our economy across the UK and to combat climate change. Projects such as HS2 would, in my opinion, go some way to achieving these goals.

Vagrancy Act

I firmly believe that just one person without a roof over their head is one too many, and it is vitally important that the most vulnerable people in society, including homeless people and rough sleepers, are helped to get their lives back on track.

Let Refugees Learn

The UK has a proud history of granting asylum to those who need our protection. Between April 2014 and June 2017, the Home Office received 97,454 claims for asylum and decided over 64,000 of these within 6 months.

Factory Farming

First of all, I would like to pay tribute to farmers right across the UK for their hard work in looking after our countryside and putting food on our tables.

As you will know, agriculture is a largely devolved issue and therefore a matter for the Scottish Government.

Demolitions in Palestine

I am deeply concerned by the deaths and injuries in both Israel and Gaza - the violence is shocking and tragic.

Fast Food Advertsing

I understand people’s concerns about obesity, particularly among children, and its impact on long term health..

NHS and Trade Deals

I welcome that the UK's exit from the European Union affords our country the opportunity to pursue an ambitious trade agenda by striking new trade agreements with countries across the globe.

Live Export of Animals

All animals deserve to be respected and cared for at every stage of their lives. I welcome that the UK has some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world.

Global Fund

I am proud of the UK's role as a global leader in efforts to end the AIDS epidemic and in tackling TB. That is why I am glad the Department for International Development (DFID) is one of the largest funders of the global HIV response, spending over £1.5 billion between 2010/11 and 2016/17.

Protecting Our Rivers

First and foremost, let me assure you of my commitment to leaving the environment in a better condition than when we inherited it. I believe that we all need to be more conscious of the waste we create and the importance of recycling.

Sino-British Joint Declaration

The recent protests in Hong Kong make it even more important for the UK Government to be unwavering in its commitment to the Sino-British Joint Declaration. It is a legally-binding treaty and remains as valid today as it did when it was signed and ratified over thirty years ago.

Talking Buses

Audio visual equipment on buses can support a wide range of disabled passengers to feel sufficiently confident to use buses. It enables them to access education, employment and other services, whether or not they are familiar with the route they are travelling.

Tougher Sentencing for Animal Cruelty

Justice is devolved in Scotland and as a result legislation on sentencing is a matter for the Scottish Parliament.

I am pleased that the UK Government is bringing forward legislation to increase punishments for the most horrific acts of animal cruelty to five years.

Yemen Crisis

I share your concerns regarding the crisis in Yemen and the plight of the Yemeni people who are caught up in the conflict. I can assure you that the Government fully recognises the severity of the humanitarian crisis.

EDM 1829 Trophy Hunting

I agree that it is important we protect endangered animals across the world. I am encouraged that the UK Government is committed to conserving the world's wildlife.

I am a strong advocate of animal welfare, including that of horses, and I am proud of the United Kingdom’s strong record on animal welfare.

Climate Emergency

The threat of global warming has never been more apparent, as highlighted by the sobering conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPPC) special report on global warming of 1.5°C.

Christian Persecution

The UK has always championed freedom of religion or belief for everyone. As a country that has always been a beacon for freedom and tolerance, I passionately believe the UK should not shirk its responsibilities.

Arms Trade

The Government takes its defence export responsibilities extremely seriously and operates one of the most robust export control regimes in the world.

Animal Testing at Porton Down

The work done by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton Down helps deliver the latest scientific and technological advantages for the UK's defence and security.
