Borders MP John Lamont has praised the Prime Minister for her response to the latest Brexit talks in Austria.
Following a volatile EU summit in Salzburg, the Prime Minister returned to the UK to say it was unacceptable for the EU to reject the UK’s proposals without offering an alternative.
She also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the United Kingdom, saying that she would not accept any proposals that jeopardised that.
The Prime Minister also gave assurances to EU citizens living in the UK that their rights will remain intact, even in the event of a no deal. There are an estimated 3,300 EU nationals living in the Scottish Borders council area.
Commenting, John Lamont MP said: “The Prime Minister was visibly angry about the outcome of the latest Brexit summit and she has every reason to be.
“There is still time to agree a deal, but only if the EU negotiates in good faith and with respect. I hope that will still be a possibility, but I agree with the Prime Minister’s resolve that any proposal cannot harm the integrity of the United Kingdom.
“Whatever happens in the next few weeks with Brexit, it is really important that the thousands of people who have made a life here in the Borders from the EU are reassured.
“I understand that this has been an uncertain time for some people. Even if no deal is concluded, your rights will be protected. To claim otherwise is simply irresponsible.”
