As part of Universal Children’s Day celebrations, John Lamont MSP helped out at Barnardo’s shop in Selkirk this week (Monday 21st November).
Marked annually on 20th November, Universal Children’s Day celebrates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child, a human rights treaty which sets out the political, economic, civil, health, social and cultural rights of children. The date also marks the day on which the General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959.
Barnardo’s Scotland provides more than 122 community-based services throughout Scotland, working with over 26,500 vulnerable children, young people and their families.
John was described as a “veteran Universal Childrens’ Day champion” by the charity in a tweet shortly before the visit.
John Lamont MSP said: “Barnardo’s are doing a fantastic job in Selkirk and it was great to help out in their shop for a bit.
“I always try to visit Barnardo’s around Universal Children’s Day, which I hope is what they meant when they described me as a ‘veteran’!”
“During my visit I heard a bit more about Barnardo’s work in the local community and their plans for the future. The volunteers and staff in Selkirk are extremely hard working and should be commended for the contribution they are making to children’s lives in the area.
“Residents can help support this valuable work by visiting the shop in Selkirk. All the money spent in Selkirk goes directly to the charity.”
