Textiles in the Borders has a bright future, local MP John Lamont has heard on a visit to Johnstons of Elgin, in Hawick.
Johnstons of Elgin is one of the oldest companies in Scotland and the mill in Hawick employs hundreds of people.
Touring the mill floor, shop and offices to speak to staff, John heard that orders were flooding in and all parts of the business were doing really well.
John Lamont MP has commented that it is time to start talking up brands like Johnsons and move away from recent negative press about the state of the industry in the Borders and the impact Brexit may have on textiles.
Commenting, John Lamont MP said: “It’s always great to pay a visit to Johnstons in Hawick, but I was particularly struck by the optimism of everyone working there at the moment.
“The team at Johnstons are working really hard to keep the business on a sure footing and to make sure its staff are happy and productive. They’ve put in a range of new measures to help staff, including standardised pay and new training opportunities.
“Strong brands like those produced by Johnstons will always have a place and are thriving in a market flooded with cheap imports by offering something different – a high quality, hand finished product.
“Given all the negative press we all hear about the impact of Brexit, I was slightly surprised by the optimism coming out of Johnstons. They are certainly not seeing any evidence of a downturn in orders and everyone is very upbeat about the future of the textiles industry in the Borders.
“Let’s start talking the industry up, for a change. Mills like Johnstons are a fantastic asset, a significant employer and showcase to the world the type of high quality products made in the Borders.”
