Local MSP John Lamont and Rachael Hamilton have shown their support for Scottish rugby at a recent event in the Scottish Parliament attended by record points and caps holder Chris Paterson MBE, from Galashiels.
The MSPs were there to discuss the work the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) are doing not only for the national side but in schools and amateur clubs across the country.
The SRU was advertising its “Everyone’s Game” campaign, which aims to promote the benefits of playing, coaching, refereeing and volunteering with Rugby clubs.
John Lamont MSP said: “I was pleased to be able to attend this meeting to show my support for Scottish Rugby. The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) does some fantastic work not only supporting our national team, but also investing in schools and amateur clubs.
“The Borders has produced more than its fair share of international stars, but the only way that is going to be maintained is through increased support for grassroots rugby. Whether you play, support from the side lines or volunteer your own time, there is a role for everyone to play at your local rugby club.
“It was a pleasure to chat with Chris Paterson from Gala, who is undoubtedly a legend of Scottish rugby, and wish him and the SRU luck for the coming year.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP said: “The Borders has a strong rugby heritage and it is a real pleasure to support an event that aims to further encourage the benefits of the game from club to professional - from playing to making the post-match sandwiches.
“It was also great to catch-up with Borders man Gregor Townsend and wish him luck for his upcoming role as Head Coach of Scotland. “Gregor is a reflection of the strength of rugby in the Borders and I hope that his success will inspire others.”
