Labour's national insurance hike costs Scottish Borders Council over £4 million

Labour's decision to increase national insurance on employers will cost Scottish Borders Council over £4 million next year.

The figures were obtained by the Scottish Conservatives in a Freedom of Information request.

The response said: "Based on the Council’s permanently established workforce, the impact of the national insurance increase in 2025/26 is estimated to be £4.328m. This includes both teaching and non-teaching staff and totals 4,274.36 FTE."

In their first budget as a UK Government, Labour opted to increase national insurance despite promising not to during the General Election campaign.

Labour broke their promises to workers and businesses by raising national insurance.

Our economy and public services will feel severe consequences from this broken promise. Front line services in the Borders will undoubtedly face cuts as a result.

Labour ought to be ashamed of putting jobs at risk, limiting what businesses can achieve, and reducing economic growth.
