John Lamont MP makes another appeal over Hawick Fire Station future ahead of decision

Scottish Borders MP John Lamont and Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton have made another appeal to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to retain 24/7 cover at Hawick Fire Station ahead of a final decision later this month.

The SFRS Board will meet on Monday, 22 June to consider the outcome of its Service Delivery Review and make final decisions on proposed changes to fire service provision across Scotland, including plans affecting Hawick Fire Station.

The proposals would see Hawick Fire Station downgraded from a full-time 24-hour service to a daytime-only operation.

John Lamont MP said: “Hawick Fire Station is a vital local presence that serves the community well and helps to keep local families and businesses safe.

"Downgrading the fire station would be a grave mistake that could put public safety at risk.

"There is widespread opposition to any reduction in service from local politicians, residents and the Fire Brigades Union.

"I urge the fire service to do the right thing and retain the existing level of service."

Rachael Hamilton MSP said: “The case for retaining a full-time service at Hawick Fire Station is overwhelming.

"The fire service must listen to the views of the local community and make this decision based solely on public safety, not budget pressures.

“The proposals to limit operations do not appear to fully account for future developments in the area, including the planned Center Parcs resort.

“Anything less than the current 24/7 service would potentially put people at risk."
