John Lamont MP recently voiced his opposition to proposals to remove the small hourly payments currently made to Coastguard rescue officers.
The Borders MP warned that the changes risk undermining the vital service that volunteers provide to coastal communities.
The proposals have been criticised by Coastguard rescue officers and organisations across the UK, who fear the removal of the payments could make it more difficult to recruit and retain trained volunteers.
John Lamont met Coastguard rescue officers outside the UK Parliament last week, including Kelly Stockdale from Eyemouth.
Borders MP John Lamont said: “Coastguard rescue officers perform a crucial role in what can be extremely challenging or even dangerous circumstances.
“The small hourly payments they receive recognise the significant commitment they make which helps to keep people safe.
"I was very happy to show my support for Coastguard rescue officers who were protesting outside the UK Parliament, including Eyemouth resident Kelly Stockdale.
"Kelly and others like her give up their time to protect coastal communities. It was a privilege to listen to what the job entails and hear the concerns of Coastguard workers and volunteers first-hand.
“The proposals are completely wrong. They could drive experienced volunteers out of the service and put public safety at risk.
“I will continue to support this campaign and urge the UK Government to think again before making changes that could put coastal communities at risk.”
