Following the honourable decision by Jackson Carlaw MSP to resign as leader of the Scottish Conservative & Unionist Party, Conservatives will be electing a new leader in the coming weeks.
I am delighted to announce that I will be backing Douglas Ross MP to be our next leader.
At a time when we are facing a renewed threat from nationalism in Scotland, we need to redouble our efforts to fight back against the SNP. We need to demonstrate what we all gain from Scotland being at the heart of the United Kingdom.
Having beaten the former SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson at the 2017 General Election to win his Moray constituency, and having won again in 2019, Douglas has shown beyond doubt he has what it takes to beat the Nationalists.
During his time in the Scottish Parliament and at Westminster, he has demonstrated that he is a formidable political figure. Not only has he shown himself to be a powerful voice for Scotland, but also that he can provide the robust leadership we need to take on and beat the SNP.
Just have a look at this recent clip of Douglas debating SNP MPs in the House of Commons to see the strong and principled leadership he would give to our party at this crucial time.
I’m delighted to be able to confirm that Douglas has already secured the backing of Ruth Davidson MSP, who has agreed to lead the charge at Holyrood as part of his team.
So if you agree with me that Douglas is the leader that our party and all pro-UK Scots need, then please join me in backing Douglas to be our next leader by emailing me at john@johnlamont.org to pledge your support.
