Borders MP John Lamont has urged the Scottish Government to “act fast” and announce a package of support for households that rely on heating oil.
The UK Government has announced a new UK-wide fund aimed at providing financial assistance to those most in need. While the Borders MP has described the package as “simply not good enough” to help those facing rising costs, he has urged the Scottish Government to set out their approach so Borders residents get the support they need.
The call follows a sharp increase in heating oil prices in recent weeks after the outbreak of war in Iran, which has had a significant impact on rural communities such as those across the Scottish Borders, where many homes rely on oil to heat their properties.
Last week, Mr Lamont launched a survey of local residents to find out the impact of rising costs. Hundreds of local people have responded, with the overwhelming majority concerned about the price spike. Residents can take part by visiting JohnLamont.org/HeatingOil.
Borders MP John Lamont said:
“The Scottish Government must urgently confirm what support will be available for Borders residents who rely on heating oil to help them through this crisis.
“We all know about the huge spike in prices that has been seen in recent weeks following the outbreak of war in Iran, and I have heard from hundreds of local people who have told me about the challenges they are facing.
“As it stands, the UK Government’s support package is not good enough. Everyone who relies on heating oil deserves a fair deal, and I will not stop fighting for the support people deserve.”
