Scottish Borders MP John Lamont has uncovered shocking new statistics about waiting times at local driving test centres.

The local MP has been contacted by many residents – particularly parents and young people – who are concerned about the long waits for driving tests.

The average waiting time for a practical driving test is more than 20 weeks for residents across the Borders. Those wishing to take a test in Kelso or Berwick-upon-Tweed face a 24-week wait, while the waiting time in Galashiels is almost 22 weeks. In Duns – the test centre with the shortest waiting time – people are still waiting more than 13 weeks for a test.

Borders MP John Lamont said:

“I know what a struggle it is for people in the Borders to secure a driving test. It is an issue that many people, particularly parents and young people, have contacted me about.

“This situation is entirely unacceptable. For many people in the Borders, driving is the only practical option for getting to work or education, going to the shops, or visiting friends and family.

“I will continue to hold the Government to account and press for quicker access to driving tests for people in the Borders. The situation simply cannot continue as it is.”
