Staff from local Tesco stores have taken part in the Great Tesco Walk, which sees colleagues walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for charity.
Over 31 days, thousands of staff are completing 51 different legs covering in total 2,400km from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
A team from the Berwick-Upon-Tweed Tesco and other local stores, completed leg 32 from Belford in Northumberland to Chirnside in the Scottish Borders, a 46km walk.
Joining them on the second half of their walk, on the Berwick to Chirnside leg, was local MP John Lamont.
Teams from other Tesco stores will now go on to complete the 16 legs in Scotland, finishing late on Thursday 5th October in John O’Groats.
The Great Tesco Walk is seeking to raise money for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation. Half of the total money raised is being spent on projects to support families to make small lifestyle changes, which will ultimately make a big difference to their health. The other half is being split equally between Diabetes UK and the BHF.
Customers of Tesco are being asked to make donations at their local stores either via charity buckets or by rounding their bill up to the nearest 10p at the checkout.
John Lamont MP said: “I was more than happy to join some of the energetic staff at Tesco on one leg of their charity walk. It was great to see so much work going in to raising money for two really important charities - Diabetes UK and British Heart Foundation.
“More than 4 million people live with Type 2 diabetes in the UK and there are an estimated 7 million living with heart and circulatory disease, so these are issues which affect far too many people.
“Tesco is leading the way in encouraging people to eat healthier and supporting charities through events like the Great Tesco Walk.
“After having completed a relatively short stretch of the 2,400km walk, I’m impressed with the effort so many staff are going through to help raise awareness and funds for Diabetes and Heart Disease.”
