Local politicians have expressed their serious concern over news that Bield Housing Association will no longer run its care homes, which could result in the closure of Milfield Gardens in Jedburgh.
Bield has announced that due to financial constraints, it will no longer run care homes across Scotland from June 2018. Scottish Borders Council are working with the housing association to find an alternative provider for the 23 care home places in Jedburgh. 28 jobs have also been put at risk by the announcement.
Bield also runs a number of retirement homes in the Borders, including Mungo Park Court in Selkirk and Priorswood Court in Melrose, but these are not affected by this news.
Local MP John Lamont has written to Bield, seeking clarification and asking what plans have been put in place to find a new owner.
John Lamont MP, said: “This is really worrying news which will concern residents at Milfield and their families. It will also affect the staff there, who now don’t know if they will have a job next year.
“I’ve written to the Bield Housing Association to ask what plans are being put in place to help find an alternative provider.
“I understand that Scottish Borders Council are confident that another provider can be found. This needs to be done as soon as possible so that residents have clarity about the future of Milfield.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP said: “A new provider must be found as a matter of urgency. We can take comfort by reassurance that a solution will be found, however, that does not mean we can be complacent.
“Care homes are vital for our ageing population here in the Borders and we need to ensure that older family and friends are looked after with compassion.”
Jedburgh Councillor Scott Hamilton added: “This news is a big blow for the town. However, we are working with our partners across the sectors to get a satisfactory result for the residents and staff.”
